The World once again is witnessing a huge tragedy in the region of South Asia during the monsoon season. In Pakistan, the most affected country during the last few days, more than 1000 people lost their lives due to the floods that affected about 33 million, that is to say, one out of seven residents of Pakistan. Moreover, according to information, more than $10 billion in damages have been recorded, and it is estimated that floods could affect up to a third of the country by the end of the monsoon season.
The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing more than 105 million workers in the 5 continents, stands in solidarity with the working class of Pakistan and the peoples of South Asia and intensifies its firm struggle for the implementation of adequate protection measures in all aspects of people’s life. We demand the immediate realization of all the needed measures and rescue missions in the flooded areas so as not to mourn more victims. Also, we demand the recovery of the flooded areas with financial support and full compensation to the affected people.
The WFTU expresses its sincere condolences to the people of Pakistan and the popular strata of the affected areas and calls upon the workers and the trade unions that could offer material support to examine and consider ways to contribute medicine, foods, and clothes to the Pakistani people.
