The World Federation of Trade Unions, the militant voice of more than 100 million workers in 132 countries of the 5 continents strongly condemns the new fatal accident that took place in a chemical plant in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India, on 7th May in the morning.
According to the information, at least 11 people have been confirmed dead and hundreds more have been hospitalized after a leak of suffocating toxic gas in an LG Polymers plant. Drivers who were passing by the plant and residents of the area lost their lives, including at least 3 children. More than 1000 people were directly exposed to the gas and tens of them are in stable but critical condition.
It is once again proven that the protection of the life of the workers and ordinary people is sacrificed on the sake of profits. The World Federation of Trade Unions demands the determination and implementation of high standard of safety and adequate protective measures for workers and the popular strata. We also demand the investigation of the accident’s conditions and punishment of the responsible.
Our thoughts are with the affected people. We express our sincere condolence to the families, friends and colleagues of the people who lost the lives.
