The World Federation of Trade Unions expresses its sincere condolences to the colleagues and families of the 8 construction workers that lost their lives due to landslide that buried their makeshift shelter while they had been asleep. The workers were working in the construction of a community hall and some of them it is estimated that were seasonal migrants from India.
Once is again proven that whether it is a heat-wave or there are floods or any other natural disaster, the workers and popular strata are unprotected, suffer and pay with their lives the lack of safety measures. The death toll in floods, landslides, lightning is raised to 200 since late May in Nepal, while the heavy rains affect the whole region.
The WFTU, on behalf of its 105 million members in 130 countries, joins its voice the peoples of southeast Asia demanding the prompt implementation of the necessary protective measures by the competent institutions for the securing of the lives and livelihood of ordinary people.
