About 200,000 people were displaced by floods brought about by monsoon rains in various parts of Myanmar. Specifically from July 1 to August 10, a total of 208,450 people from 51,774 households were forced to flee their homes.
The most affected regions were parts of Sagaing Region, Magwe Region, Chin State, Bago Region, Kayin State, Ayeyarwady Region, Mon State, Nay Pyi Taw, Rakhine State, Shan State and Tanintharyi Region.
This is not the first time that the people of Myanmar suffer because of natural disasters due to the lack of basic protection measures. The poorest areas in Myanmar and generally in the South-East Asia are completely exposed to bad weather.
The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing 92 million workers in the 5 continents, demands the immediate protection of the Myanmar people from the destructive consequences of the floods and possible future natural disasters. The safety of the working class and the popular strata must be the first priority of the states regardless of the economical cost required for the adequate protection’s measures.
