The four people in custody in Belgium are all Italians, as part of the investigation into an alleged criminal organization linked to Qatar and suspected of interference and corruption in the European Union. The Belgian federal court says that there are 4 people in custody, including the former European deputy of the Pd Pier Antonio Panzeri and Luca Visentini, trade unionist Uil, former president of the European trade unions and current secretary of the International Confederation of Trade Unions Ituc, as well as an NGO director and a European parliamentary assistant.
Furthermore, according to “Le Soir”, during the searches in Panzeri’s house, around 500 thousand euros in cash were found. The investigators “suspect that a Gulf country has attempted to influence the economic and political decisions of the European Parliament”, added the prosecutor, explaining that the modalities would consist in the payment of money or “important” gifts. The Public Prosecutor’s Office does not explicitly mention Qatar, but several sources cited by “Le Soir” and “Knack” claim that Doha is at the center of the investigation.”
