The World Federation of Trade Unions, on behalf of its 105 million members in 132 countries all over the world, conveys sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the strong earthquake that hit central Croatia, southeast of Zagreb, yesterday.
We hope the people who are still in danger because of the collapsed buildings be found safe and wish the quick recovery of all injured persons. We demand the implementation of immediate and adequate measures to ensure that no other lives will be lost.
The WFTU expresses its support and solidarity to the affected people and the workers of Croatia. We call on the responsible authorities to immediately take all necessary relief measures for those affected by the earthquake and take all necessary anti-seismic protection measures for the safety of the people.
Workers and the poor people are the first to lose their lives or get injured during natural disasters. The militant world trade union movement once more highlights the necessity of struggling for safe and proper buildings for all workers, where they will be protected against natural disasters and extreme weather conditions.
