The European Regional Office of WFTU expresses its grief and indignation about the many economic refugees dead after their boat carrying hundreds of African migrants sank off the Italian island of Lampedusa with the number of dead now exceeding 300.
Humanity is going through a particularly difficult and harsh era; an era expressed by the deepening of the world crisis of the capitalist system, resulting in socio-economic inequalities and exploitation increasing, poverty levels and unemployment rising and millions of poor and desperate people being forced to emigrate.
At the same time, the imperialist so-called New World Order doesn’t hesitate to use war and destruction to impose specific geo-political interests, cultivating and fermenting conflicts and destabilization processes, targeting solely the control of the world’s natural resources and serving the interests of the powerful industrial states of the multinational companies.
It is therefore evident that the causes of the phenomenon of emigration in modern times are t? be found in the capitalist system itself. They are the result of the socio-economic conditions created by the forcible implementation of neo-liberal globalization.
The need for working people to promote their coordination in a front against the lawlessness of globalization and neo-liberalism is as never ever before imperative. The class oriented trade union movement of WFTU in Europe utilizing the organization and rallying of working people’s forces must wage battles till the very end and assert the formation of conditions where emigration shouldn’t be the option or the alternative for any worker, for a just society that will abolish the exploitation of man by man.
