The agricultural workers of the Foggiano, members of the USB, this morning have symbolically occupied for three hours San Nicola Cathedral in Bari.
The workers requested and obtained a meeting with the Archbishop of Bari-Bitonto, Francesco Cacucci, who listened in the cathedral the requests made by the USB national coordination of agricultural workers.
For years there has been a struggles to obtain concrete solutions to the situation of illegality in which the workers are forced to work and survive.
This means regular employment contracts, procedures for issuing documents, safe transports, the right to housing, health protection and recognition of dignity.
In addition, the issue of residence permits to get out of the invisibility.
With this morning’s initiative USB intended to fight against the indifference of the Puglia regional administration and the Italian Government, which tries to turn a social issue into a matter of public safety.
In the countryside of Foggia, in fact, the worker’s shacks continue to be razed to the ground without offering an alternative solution in terms of housing insertion.
The struggle for the worker’s rights, housing, social security and safety at work does not stop, in memory of the many workers who died in the agricultural chain.
