The World Federation of Trade Unions Expresses its sympathy and condolences to the families of at least 14 people died after an illegal gold mine in western Ghana in which they were working collapsed.
Ghana is Africa’s second largest gold producer after South Africa, but the poverty of its people drives the local people to mine in the abandoned pits for gold and other resources leading to disasters and deaths of these people. While the mineral resources and especially gold is more than adequate for the people of Ghana to live with dignity, the national and international monopolies are stealing the wealth from the workers that produce it and make them suffering in poverty.
The World Federation of Trade Unions strongly believes that the people and the workers of Africa have the power to change their lives and calls the class oriented trade unions of Ghana and its people to struggle for Stable work, good wages, social security, better working hours, social security, healthcare and social services, safe houses and safe workplaces, the raw materials and the agricultural production to be controlled and used by the people of Africa.
