A delegation from Malaysia visited yesterday Wednesday November 23, 2011 the WFTU Headquarters after an official invitation from the WFTU. The delegation composed by Michael Tan Eng Hong, President of NUBE, J. Solomon, General Secretary of National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE), Narenthra Rao, Treasurer of NUBE, S.Nadarajan , General Secretary of National Union of Drink Industry Workers Peninsular Malaysia (NUDIW) and Abdul Razak, President of The Railwaymen’s Union of Malaysia (RUM). At the meeting participated also the President of the TUI BIFU, comrade C.H.Venkatachalam from AIBEA India.
The delegation had a bilateral meeting with the General Secretary of WFTU.
They had meaningful discussions in a friendly and comradely spirit. NUBE’s report was based in its demand to stop the exploitation of Maybank workers in Malaysia. NUBE has been in dispute with Maybank for causing wide income gap among the 6,000 workers of the lowest income group. Maybank decided to use the government and the police to intimidate and harass the Union officials and its workers. Maybank refuse to comply with the Articles in the Collective Agreement arbitrarily and is taking disciplinary actions against its employees who are officers of the union while performing their trade union activities furtherance to a trade dispute. Maybank has initiated multiple defamation suites against NUBE and its officers despite the protection provided for trade Unions under the Trade Union Act, ILO Convention 98, Declarations of Human Rights and Collective Agreements.
WFTU’s General Secretary focused in the need of closer cooperation and coordination of action the three sectors represented by the delegates from Malaysia, that is in Banks, Rail transport and Soft Drinks industry. A plan of action was elaborated for the immediate implementation against all forms of violation of Human and Democratic Freedom and Trade Union Rights. Another sectoral program was decided to be put into practice with the WFTU TUI BIFU.
The visit was completed with the affiliation request that the three Trade Unions deposited to WFTU headquarters.
The delegation from Malaysia participated at the strike that are the workers of the “GREEK STEELWORKS” (Helliniki Halivourgia) industry as well as at the Meeting organized by PAME.
