On the occasion of International Migrants Day, on December 18th, the World Federation of Trade Unions, representing 105 million workers in 132 countries on the five continents , expresses its solidarity with the estimated 272 million migrant workers globally, who were forced to leave their countries due to conflicts, poverty, hunger and misery.
Such conditions are created by the exploitation and plundering of the peoples’ natural resources for the profits of the multinationals, by the antagonisms of imperialists forces and alliances who compete for the control of natural resources and of the markers, creating wars and waves of uprooted people.
As the world, class-oriented trade union movement, we call upon all workers and trade unions to strengthen our solidarity with migrant workers who also at the host countries work under harsh exploitation and mistreatment. Now, during the COVID-19 Pandemic, the migrant workers are the first ones to get infected and lose their life, since they live and work in improper buildings, lacking basic protection measures.
The duty of militant trade unions is to be by the side of migrant workers, to try to organize them in the struggles, to oppose the voices of racism and neo-fascism against them. The workers have nothing to divide us. On the contrary, it is the united struggle of local and migrant workers for their rights, for the covering of their contemporary needs, for the end of exploitation, that can put an end to workers’ suffering and to the causes of migration.
