On January 5th, 2021, the launch of the WFTU International Campaign for the release of Palestinian child prisoners and all prisoners from the Israeli jails becomes a reality from inside Palestine: After the initiative of the General Union of Palestine Workers (GUPW), solidarity events are organized at the Headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ramallah, Gaza, Tulkarem and Lebanon.
In the solidarity event organized in Ramallah, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization handed over the memorandum of the WFTU about the Palestinian prisoners and their rights and the demand for their freedom, while the head of the Prisoners Affairs Authority, representatives of the Palestinian Prisoners Club, and members of the GUPW General Secretariat participated.
In Lebanon, the GUPW General Secretary, Abdul Kader Abdallah, gave a speech, where among others he stressed:
“We call on the United Nations and international humanitarian and legal institutions to take their vanguard role in fairness to our brave prisoners who suffer the worst conditions of detention in the absence of international protection of their human rights. In front of the huge numbers of prisoners and detainees in the overcrowded occupation prisons in the most horrific conditions of detention. The prisoners are more than 5.000 , including women, mothers, minors, children, elderly, sick, people with chronic diseases and with terminal illnesses. There is a special medical care they need and the absence of this care makes us increasingly anxious about their conditions and their lives, especially in light of the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic and the absence of adequate health care.”
In Tulkarem, The Governor of Tulkarem affirmed the permanent position of solidarity with Palestinian prisoners in the occupation prisons, referring to the dangers and difficult conditions faced by the prisoners and Mai Abu Alia, GUPW Depute General Secretary, spoke about the initiative of the General Union of Palestinian Workers, the World Federation of Trade Unions and all partners and relevant competent authorities, who came today to support and stand by the Palestinian heroes and prisoners in the occupation prisons.
An event of support and solidarity also took place in front of the Red Cross Headquarters in Gaza.
