The WFTU President cde Mzwandile Michael Makwayiba addressed the 9th National POPCRU Congress and delivered to the delegates the following message of the WFTU General Secretary:
Greeting Message of the WFTU General Secretary
Dear comrades of POPCRU,
On behalf of the World Federation of Trade Unions, I send you our warm militant greetings to you, COSATU, SACP and the people of South Africa.
I am sorry that reasons outside my will did not allow me to be with you today. I apologize and ask for your understanding.
On behalf of the 97 million workers in 130 countries around the world we convey you our militant salute and solidarity. The WFTU and the South African militant trade unions have been, are and will be together in the fight to abolish exploitation. Our future is not capitalist barbarity but the socialist perspective!
The continuation of our common struggles is of particular importance today, at the stage of overcoming the capitalist crisis, where the bourgeoisie in every country of the world is attacking the working class, through drastic wage and pensions cuts, intensification of work, lack of security measures and even violence against struggling workers and youth.
At this time, there is a particularly great need for us, the militants: to be close to one another. Although our terms and conditions may seem different in many ways, exploitation is the same because we do not enjoy the wealth we create daily with our toil.
The main task of our trade unions, today, is to bring workers together under such demands and slogans that reveal the only way to get rid of our problems: to abolish exploitation of man by man.
Dear POPCRU comrades, Brothers and Sisters,
Since its birth, the World Federation of Trade Unions has been and continues to be developed on the basis of the following principles and values:
– The unity of the working class
– Internationalism and international solidarity
– We are against the imperialist wars
– We are against the plundering of Africa by multinationals
We have a good reason to be optimistic that, united on a militant basis, we can all live together in a better world. Africa is the continent with the richest natural resources.
– But who are the ones who get rich from African diamonds?
– Who are getting rich from African gold? From coffee, gas, seas and land of Africa?
They are the multinationals, the monopolies and the capitalists.
So there is only one solution. We must unite and claim all the wealth that belongs to us.
In this way, the WFTU, whose unions exist in every corner of the world, stands by your side in this struggle.
In order to achieve a class oriented and militant unity like this, it is necessary to improve both our ideological and theoretical level daily. We have a big weapon in our hands: our theory and strategy.
We need trade union training that is going to teach workers how to fight, not how to kneel in front of the capitalists.
We need trade union training that will strengthen the class consciousness of workers and not push them into the muddy waters of reformism.
A basic principle of the WFTU is proletarian internationalism and internationalist solidarity.
At the moment we are talking, the Israeli army is killing Palestinians. They are trampling on the heroic land of Palestine.
At the same time as we are discussing here, in Libya, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and Iraq, the imperialists, along with their allies, are attacking to steal the natural resources of the countries, build new spheres of influence and redistribute the land.
We must all unite our voices with all the people who resist and demand the immediate end of imperialist interventions to stop the imperialist wars so that all refugees can return to their homes.
Long live internationalist solidarity!
Long live the international working class!
At the end of this brief greeting, please allow us to reaffirm the respect of the WFTU for the thousands of victims of apartheid but also for the struggle to abolish it.
We express our respect for your heroic struggle, we bow to our unforgettable comrade, WFTU Vice President Moses Mabhida, to honor our long and common course, our common and fierce struggles.
On the 75th anniversary of the WFTU we will be organizing special events for our joint militant course and the heroic struggle of the working class of South Africa.
We commit ourselves here, in front of you all, saying:
We have always been and will continue to be by your side.
On behalf of WFTU, I once again express our warm greeting to your conference, and I wish you every success, your documents and discussion will be useful tools, not only for POPCRU, but also for workers in every country.
Long live POPCRU!
Long live COSATU!
Long live the WFTU!
Long live internationalism!
