World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) strongly protests against the imposition of ban in the functioning of Mining and Allied Services Employees Union (MASEU) which is an affiliate to Trade Union Confederation of Sierra Leon (TUC-SL) by the Acting Commissioner of Labour, Government of Sierra Leone. The action is undemocratic and in violation of fundamental right to Association and right to Collective Bargaining. Moreover the step has been taken unilaterally without showing any reason and/or without any notice to the unions.
The anti-labour policy of the Government is crystal clear because, the MASEU was fighting against the anti labour stances of the multinational corporations which are apt to demolish the workers right. Therefore the action by Government Labour Authority is revengeful against the workers. As a distinct of measure of unfair labour practice the Acting Labour commissioner had given sole bargaining right to a management sponsored union by snatching the genuine right from the legally recognized union. Such step is to the detriment of the Trade Union Ordinance of the country and several international conventions and covenants.
WFTU express serious concern on the anti-labour action taken by the Acting Commissioner of Labour, Government of Sierra Leon. WFTU, further, express solidarity to the struggle of MASEU in reestablishing recognition by the Labour Authority. WFTU also appeals to all its affiliates all over the world to express solidarity with the fighting workers of Sierra Leon.
