The General Assembly of UNESCO decided to recognize Palestine as a full member of the Organization despite the pressure from the side of USA and Israel. From the Member states, 107 were in favor, 14 against and 52 abstained. The Palestinian Authority participates in UNESCO as an “observer”since 1974.
This decision is a result of the stable and continuous solidarity expressed by the peoples of the world to the struggle of the Palestinians. The internationalist solidarity must now be further strengthened for the full recognition of the Palestinian State as an independent, sovereign, democratic state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The WFTU Permanent Representative in UNESCO, Mr. Apostolos Sotiropoulos took part at the 36th Session of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and talked amongst others about unemployment and the immigrants’ issues.
