Joint Meetings of Affiliates of World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) on May Day The Pakistan Labour Federation (PLF) Peoples Trade Union Workers Federation of Pakistan (PTUWF) Pakistan National Federation of Trade Union (PNFTU) While addressing the Meeting Haji Muhammad Saeed Arian Founder/Secretary General Pakistan Labour Federation (PLF) said that The day also known as May Day commemorates the workers’ fight for the eight-hour working day which culminated in Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886 when a peaceful workers’ rally was fired upon by police Due to Lock Down to protect the workers /Peoples In Pakistan only the main officials of the Federations were attended this meeting in Lahore and Provincial Meeting in Karachi, Quetta, Peshwar and AJ&K arranged by Provincial Presidents He demanded the Government implement Labour Laws, Raise Minimum wages to at least Rs.30,000/- a month and put in place a mechanism to save precious lives of Labourers at workplaces, provide social security to all workers, stop privatization, apply Labour Laws to farm workers and stop razing slums of Laborer’s Mrs. Atia Saleem Chairperson (PLF) said the Government was not sincere with Laborer’s as it was preparing to privatize all national institutions including WAPDA. Railways (PIA) and other public institutions Malik Ali Umar Awan President (PNFTU) said that the Laborers’ children had no access to education but even if they did manage to get education they did not get jobs. Labourers were deprived of almost all basic rights and were highly underpaid, Ch. Tariq Javed President ((PTUWF) , demanding the Government fix minimum workers’ wage to the equivalent of market price of 10 grams of gold. Mr. Asaf F Vardag President (PLF) urged the Government to implement international conventions on the fundamental Rights of Workers and the country’s Labour Laws to protect rights of Workers . All Leaders strongly condemned the Government policy to privatize National institutions and demanded the Government Nationalize banks and insurance companies and 50%reserve seats in Assemblies and Senate for Workers Peasants and Working Women’s. They demanded resolution of genuine problems of labourers. The leaders demanded an end to exploitation of the downtrodden workers and peasants.
They said that due to Corona Virus We are unable to organized Rallies, workshops, seminars and other events in all over the Country the International Labour Day to observe the May Day.in a very smile. The All Leaders appreciated the Health workers of (PPMA) to provide the Medical Aids to effective peoples to risk their own life They said the incumbent Federal and Provincial Governments exploited the rights of working class. They said that the Labourers were playing a key role in the country’s development but lamented that successive Governments’ ignored the plight of this class. They said that no change can be brought in the lives of working class until the capitalists and landlords dominated the policies and calling shots in the country.
They said that rulers were playing politics over the issues and problems were being faced by the working class, adding the problems of the working class remained unsolved. They said the labourers would have to get united and struggle collectively for rights like the labourers did in Chicago in the US. They said neither the Federal nor the provincial Government did anything tangible for the working class. They demanded increase in the salaries and wages of labourers according to the sky rocketing inflation in the country. They expressed solidarity with peasants and workers. The paid rich tributes to labourers who had sacrificed their lives at Chicago for rights of workers worldwide. They said had the labourers not sacrificed lives at Chicago, their rights would have been exploited today. They held a ceremony to remember the sacrifices of the workers of Chicago and workers and people of all walks of life attended the ceremony.
They demanded that Minimum Wage of the labourers should be fixed Rs.30,000/- while the Government should also increase pensions through Employees Old Age Benefit Institutions (EOBI).
