The WFTU General Secretary George Mavrikos is visiting Italy to participate in the 2nd USB National Congress in Tivoli, Rome on June 9th to 11th.
Today morning, on June 9th , a delegation of the WFTU, composed by comrades from Greece, Cuba, Basque Country and Cyprus, has visited the workers of the Italian Institute of Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), leading an occupation lasting three weeks now, bringing them the solidarity of the WFTU.
Throughout the speeches, came into clear evidence the natural link of the struggle of the ISPRA workers with all of the struggles against the EU target of dismantling the whole Public Sector, in particular Public Research.
The struggle for the stabilisation of precarious workers and the re-boost of public research institutes is at the basis of the occupation at the ISPRA site in Rome and this took new energy in the example of the Cuban social model, in which Research is an absolute priority and researchers are adequately supported, not oppressed, as happening in Italy.
A very important morning, where the ISPRA workers in struggle received the ideal hug from the 92 million workers affiliate to WFTU, fighting for a different social model, where the Public Sector is a precious resource to invest on.
Later, the WFTU General Secretary delivered a Greeting Speech in the Congress and in the afternoon he will take part in the International Meeting titled: “17° World Trade Union Congress – Struggle – Internationalism – Unity. The challenges of class oriented trade unions” with the presence of all international delegations.
