The WFTU representing over 82 million workers across the five continents expresses its sadness at the tragic loss of lives of the miner comrades trapped in a mine at San Juan de Sabinas in northern Mexico after a gas explosion.
This incident joins a long list of mining accidents, due to the lack of security measures provided by the companies of the sector and it represents an example of the dire consequences of capitalist exploitation and anti-labor policies. The health and safety at work is a fundamental duty in the struggle of the class-oriented trade union movement.
We demand every effort to be made in order to rescue the miners still trapped and to take the necessary measures to avoid the recurrence of this type of accidents.
The WFTU expresses its international solidarity and our full support to the trapped miners, their families, friends and colleagues and our condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased miners.
On the occasion of this tragic incident we call on all unions to strengthen the struggle for the improvement of security measures. The life of workers is the most precious thing in the world. We call on the continuing struggle for safety measures in the workplace.
