Speech of General Secretary of Intersindical-CSC Isabel Pallares in Brussels, 13/14 september 2007

From Intersindical-CSC of Catalonia we wish to thankful the invitation in this conference and we are glad to join in.

 

We have verified in most of the speeches, women discrimination in labour is the common point, even the main one.

We understand this subject comes since long time ago and we ought to face from several fields. It is a cultural and attitude problem reflected in labour and social world.

 

Labour market have a deep male wing where women are discriminate againts, display by particular facts; wage discrimination because the gender and work part-time employing mostly women which couldn’t choose the contract, whom have been imposed it in front of the worse scenario so-call unemployment.

Actually, these types of contract means to do the auxiliary tasks in practice, with really low salaries, with barely coverages and social benefits. This situation keeps women in economical precariousness stage everlasting their social lower position.

 

Several spanish goverments approved laws in order to promote gender equality but just reaching to a simple forecast formality: “same job same salary”….

Just words on a law not adaptted to the reality. This way, the contents articles of law is not facing inequality, neither it is displayed as a real problem of discrimination, extending a situation with a suitable make up.

 

At the same time it is an appropriate change of attitudes and behaviors.

It looks like is not possible to break that fake principle where men are the public responsible holder and women are the private responsible ones.

By now it is urgent to make decisive steps towards the corresponsability and in this field we need everyone’s solidarity.

 

From Intersindical-CSC we deeply realize which is the women situation in labour world and we are ready to use all our skills and tools that we have to change this situation.

We are sure, a step forward to improve the labour conditions will be reflected on social world at once.

 

So, we propose as main action lines:

 

1. Demanding our goverments that every women work casualty period, because social necessary works (pregnacy, childcare, grand’scare family needs…) are take on as usual work period to Social Security network benefits.

2. Stopping precarious contracts that are affected mostly of women. This is the main subject to negotiate in every work agreement.

3. It must to be included informal economy in the formal economy in order to avoid precariousness on women.

4. Warranting a basic incoming for non-incoming women. As a result of sexist distribution of paid and non-paid work, most of the women do not have enought own incomings. Personal autonomous is cut out because economic dependence. Warranting a basic incoming is a essential element for freedom and personal dignity.

5. Warranting to migrant women same step forward in social and labour rights than local ones in order to help them getting out from informal economy.

6. It is necessary to insist on participation and responsability on union’s membership. A class oriented unions shouldn’t be accomplice in any levels.

 

 

In our country, Catalonia, women are oppressed double. As being a woman and as living in a lesser state country.

Intersindical-CSC , as a catalan and class oriented union that fighting for national construction of Catalonia, realizes we belong to a country where is not possible to decide about social and labour rights and duties. We are involved in a long struggle in order to get the national sovereignity rigths we deserve from Spain and France.

 

So, the challenge is clear:

Making to move forward our nation towards a free and solidarity future.
