4 May 2009Less than 24 hours before the beginning of the May Day celebrations, it was announced that 1,957 representatives of social, solidarity and workers’ movements from 80 countries are already in Cuba to take part in the celebrations along with the Cuban people. 906 of these visitors are trade unionists from 236 organizations.
This year the festivity coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the 1959 Revolution and the 70th Anniversary of Cuban Workers Federation (CTC), and it will consist of rallies that will take place simultaneously in Havana’s Plaza de la Revolution and the main squares and avenues of the provinces. George Mavrikos, Secretary General of the World Federation of Trade Unions, met yesterday with more than 200 Latin American leaders of trade unions affiliated to or friends of the WFTU. At the meeting, which was held at the CTC headquarters in Havana, the delegates were briefed on the work carried out by this organization over the last few years, as well as on the actions scheduled for the next months as part of the strategy to face the world crisis, from which the workers are suffering the worst.
