The World Federation of Trade Unions [WFTU] is glad to announce that Comrade JAIME DUQUE, President of the United Trade Union of Workers of Construction Materials [SUTIMAC] of Colombia, who was abducted by paramilitary forces (see WFTU press release No. 10) on 24 March 2001, has been freed by his captors, following international protests and worldwide solidarity actions. The World Federation of Trade Unions [WFTU] draws the urgent attention of the international community to the increasing assassinations and kidnappings of trade union leaders in Columbia. On March 24, at 5.30 p.m, a group of heavily armed paramilitary forces violently attacked a workers’ meeting and after hitting them, they kidnapped comrade Jaime Duque, President of the Building and Building Materials Workers Union [SUTIMAC], leader of the CUT in Antioche and a worker of the Cairo cement factory. Since January this year, the working class and people of Salvador are suffering the terrible consequences of unprecedented natural disasters – the continuous earthquakes, loss of thousands of lives, innumerable persons listed as missing and huge material destruction. There are more than one million damaged buildings. Over 300,000 houses and schools have been totally destroyed. One and a half million of them suffered 60 per cent damage.
